In 2011, following the death of his wife of 53 years, Gretchen, Sam founded the National Widowers’ Organization. Motivated by his own experience navigating grief, he was determined to create a supportive community where widowers could find compassion, connection and practical resources. His vision was to build a place where men, often overlooked in grief support, could openly share their journeys and receive the help they needed.
Beyond his work with the National Widowers’ Organization, Sam was instrumental in founding several community-focused initiatives, including the FARM Institute, the Farm-Based Education Network and the Martha’s Vineyard Film Society. His contributions enriched the lives of many and strengthened the sense of community on the island.
Sam is survived by his daughters, Dene and Leigh and his grandchildren, Nathaniel, Maxwell and Vera. He will be remembered for his unwavering dedication to others, his visionary leadership and his deep love for his family and community.
His legacy endures through the National Widowers’ Organization, continuing to offer support and guidance to men navigating loss, just as Sam envisioned.
